Question
I think I'm in trouble...You see I have a puppy...7 months old and I'm having a terrible time housebreaking him....He does do his buisness outside but in the house its like...I feel the need so I do it...Now this is where I'm in trouble......

I got him from the pet shop...so the puppy was used to doing #2 in his cage...great right....huh..not now....#1 on an absorbant(diaper)...great...most of the time

He has the run of the house...he's so small (Yorkshire/Northfolk)..even when I'm at work....BUT now he's doing his buisness in the dinig room by the table....on the carpet....When I catch him ..I discipline him and bring him outside and of course clean clean clean. But he goes back again and again.

I never wanted to leave him in his cage..I never raised a dog with a cage...being originally from the country....I tried removing the diaper..but he knows the spot....unfortunately I can't be a home all the time.....oh! at night he's great...sleeps like a log.

NOW well I'm trying to get him accustomed to being in the cage...so now I hope that it's not too late...can you please give me some advice...like how long to keep him in solitary confinement.....to get him use to the cage....if he has an accident...I suppose no longer than he can hold out..bladder-wise.

Is it ok to pet him while in the cage....to reassure him..and prevent him from whining...or just let him whine till he gets used to it...

Can you please help me out...

Answer
hi david
Please do not punish this little one with a cage or crate. U got him at a pet shop, this tells me he was bought through a puppy mill that inbreeds, and does all kinds of bad things.  The puppy could very well have a bladder problem not being cared for in a puppy mill?  I am certain you have heard and read about these mills around selling cheap pups and dogs to pets stores, promising papers, pedigrees, etc???  Those poor creatures are kept in wire cages off the ground kinda like Beagles hunting dogs, no food nor water, never wormed, no paper work done so they breed to whomever, some die of dirt and no brushing of the coats, they become so entangled it pulls the skin off.  I shut one down on our area along with the st dog officer.  It was deplorable conditions for nice little yorkies, maltese, etc.  Dirty and crumby and white ones were yellow living in their own urine.
NOW.  place this little one in one room with a baby gait to gait it off.  Place cardboard down layered with papers.  Place at the door u will always exit when working with the pup and to the same spot outside.  Wait and Wait.  When it does go pet and praise and a huge hug of good dogggie u did it.  Soon it catches on but it must be left out hourly in case of urnineary problems from inbreeding from father to daughter.
Never keep a pet in a cage to train it.  This proves nothing, if it has a real problem it must go in there so it never really associates this with potty training.  It must learn to relieve outdoors by your taking out faithfully hourly or somebody and keep in one room also. clean with citrus orange it kills the odors so it is not so inclined to go again need be.
It will learn with much patience and love.
Lift the water at six p.m. and take out late as the late news or late show.  WAIT!  Pet and praise when u see him try anything most will not go inside a crate, so at night place papers and a clean towel to sleep on and put him in the crate at night only.  No food or water just a toy.  Place by a night light also.   Play a radio for comfort too.
when he gets potty trained with all this u will say:  WELL WORTH ALL THIS FOR HIM AND HE IS NOT A BAD DOG BUT A REALLY GOOD ONE THAT NEEDED TAUGHT WITH PATIENCE BY ME THE BOSS.

warm regards
