frequent gagging, throw-ups

Question
We are owners of our second standard poodle, and I foolishly hoped that our first dog's frequent throwing up, etc., was just his own quirk.  Unfortunately, our second standard is as bad or worse.  He often throws up yellow phlegm, and just as often whatever contents is in his digestive tract.

Also, he humps when he wants attention, or sometime after I've groomed him or been paying attention to him.  He was neutered at about 6 months, and started humping as young as eight weeks old.

Thanks so much for any help you can offer!

Answer
Hello Timi,
Some Poodles tend to have sensitive stomachs and are prone to vomiting after they eat.  It can be due to sensitivity to the dog food ingredients, or it could be allergies.  You might try switching to a Lamb and Rice variety if the brand of dog food you use carries it.  Lamb and Rice tends to be more gentle on a dogs stomach than beef or chicken and corn.  You can also give your dog a Benedryl in the evening if it is allergy related, but I would try the Lamb and Rice formula first to see if this helps any.

As for your dogs humping, you need to use Dominate training to help stop this.  When your dog humps your leg, don't say anything to him (because when you talk to him or acknowledge him, you are giving him what he wants; your attention, whether its good attention or bad attention) lay him down in the submissive position (laying on his side with his head down) and make him submit to you until YOU say he can get up.  Hold him down if need be and don't let him get up until you feel him relax and submit; you can stare at him until he looks away, then ignore him until you decide to let him up.  When you do decide to let him up, just walk away from him and let him get up on his own.  If he tries humping again, repeat the process.   You can use this dominance training whenever he decides to be mischievous.
You might also think about getting your dog into Obedience training or something like Agility (where your dog goes over Obstacles on a course) or even Therapy training.  Poodles are active dogs and need an Out for all that energy.  Even a long walk around the block or throwing his favorite toy for him for an hour a day will help calm him down and make him the Poodle that you know he can be.
If you need to find trainers in your area, check your local yellowpages or get references from your Vet or Pet Store (some Pet Stores such as PetSmart or PetCo even offer training classes through their shop).

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions or comments for me, please feel free to ask me.
