Question
QUESTION: I have two questions please. The 1st do red toy poodles generally cost more to buy than other colours?
Secondly I am looking to buy a female toy poodle but we currently have a 10 year old female miniture.Would a male be a better fit?
With thanks,Jill.

ANSWER: Hello Jill,
Reds are awesome.  I have a Red Standard Poodle and they are the Best.  However, the Red line does tend to be lower quality as far as hair is considered and some that you find can have temperment issues.  You will want to make sure you buy through a Reputable Breeder.
Because the Red line was more recently introduced, the Reds are considered newer and therefore can be a bit more pricy than your typical Blacks and Whites.
If you are not planning to breed your Poodle, you might see if Breeders have Pet quality Poodles for sale that will be sold on either a Spay/Neuter Policy and/or a Limited Registery (meaning the dog you purchase can be registered, but none of its off-spring will be eligible for registration).  These are not poor quality dogs, just dogs that are not quite quality enough for the Show Ring.  They should still come with a Health Guarntee and be as sound as the other puppies in the litter.
You might also be interested in adults that the Breeder may need to place in good homes.  These are dogs that maybe the Breeder intended to keep, but for one reason or another now needs to place.  They should be available at a lower cost, and will be housebroken, and accustomed to house living.

I would think getting another Female would be fine for you.  Just be sure that when you let your 10 yr old meeet the new girl, that you do it on netural ground.  Let them meet at a park or somewhere other than your house.  Otherwise the 10 yr old may feel that she needs to be on guard around her/your stuff.  If the new girl acts dominate or aggressive, make her submit to the older dog by making her lay down on the ground with her head down until she will relax.  Let the older dog come and sniff the youngster and keep the younger dog down until YOU let her up.  The size and age of a dog doesn't matter as much as the temperment and how dominate the dog is.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions about this or other Poodle questions in general, please feel free to ask me.

Answer
Hey again Jill,
From what you said about this breeder, it sounds like they are reputable.  You could do a Vet Check with their Vet if you wanted to.  Just let them know you are getting a puppy from this breeder and does she seem like a good breeder to them.  You might also want to ask about a Health Guarantee, so that if anything is found to be wrong, you can either return the pup or get some money back.  If their dogs are as good as they sound, then they should have no problem with a guarantee of at least 6 months.  If they balk at that, you might at least see if you can get Your Vet to look at the pup before you buy.  I am not saying that there is anything wrong with the pup or even with the breeders, but I have heard stories of people that have gotten "burned" by a bad deal, and are then stuck with it.
Other than that, if you are happy with the puppy, then I say "Go For It".  If you would like me to look at him and evaluate him (in picture form anyway) send me some pics either on here or to MsTopkdog@hotmail.com  I will see if he looks good to me as far as head, coat, etc.

Talk to you soon,
Kim
