Question
hello, I have a pitbull 8 mos old.  I'm trying to figure out ways to keep him engaged in activity when I am out to work long hours.  I go to school too and am away from him for a while, so I'd like some suggestions for toys and other things that he can stay engaged in.

Answer
There are lots of toys out there, the key thing is going to be to make sure its nothing he can chew up and swallow.  If he's a chewer then you really don't want to leave anything out for him to possibly swallow.  If he's not going to chew up his toys then there are a lot of things you can buy him - from stuffed animals to the kongs you can hide food in to make him work for a treat.  Something as simple as giving them an empty 2 liter bottle works great too.  I don't know how much space he has, so some toys might not work so well - like the bottle or balls.  Always give him any toy under your supervision until you are sure he is not going to eat it.  Even if he doesn't eat it I still have to strongly caution you to be careful on what toys he gets when your not around - I can't tell you how many foreign body surgeries we've had lately.  If he is a chewer, then you want to get him something he can play with, and eat safely.  Rawhides or pig ears work great, but make sure they're not going to give him diarrhea - rawhides made in the U.S. are best.  Don't give him any actual bones since those can cause an obstruction as well.  If you can find a pre-processed rawhide that's even better as then there is even less of a chance of him swallowing something he can't digest.  Pretty much all you're going to be able to find to give him if he's a chewer are rawhides.  But they make a variety of shapes and flavors to keep him occupied for awhile.
