Almost any female dog will begin to go into heat around one year of age or a little after, and continue to do so twice a year unless you have her spayed. In has been my experience that the heat period lasts around three weeks, with the actual bleeding lasting anywhere from one to two weeks. This may vary from dog to dog, however.

It is ideal that you get her spayed (if you plan on doing so) before the first heat happens. It has been proven that doing so can reduce the risks of serious health problems later on in life. Your veterinarian can probably give you a wealth of information on the subject.
