potty training second puppy

Question
We purchased our second Maltese a couple of months ago.  He's now 4 months old and our oldest will turn 1 yr in July.  We seem to have a problem getting our new puppy potty trained.  We had such great success with the older one and we can't seem to remember what we did or if we did something differently.  The puppy doesn't seem to react to any of the scolding (non-physical).  I haven't found any literature or websites that tell you how to potty train a second puppy.

Answer
Hello thankyou for your question, i have a number of tasks you could try, if you havent already. the first which was extremley sucsessful with my little boy was the potty training pads however if you dont know how to use them they are useless.
They have a scent in that attracts the pup to do his "buisness" on you can buy a pack and they can be used more than once.
Firstly place the pad where the puppy generally plays, you may need multiple pads at this stage, then keep placing the pup on the pads or when he goes to the toilet in an unwanted place immediatley pplace him on the pad. i can understand that it is difficult to watch the puppy at all times so it can be hard to determine when he needs the bathroom, but they cannot tell you that they need the toilet. Eventuelly move the pads nearer to the door to the outside and also place one outside in the garden there is also a potty training spray you can purchase which has the "scent" for doggy toilet. it is called simple soloution potty training aid and has a money back guarentee. spray this outside where you want your pup to go, and keep picking him up and placing him in the spot. the tel for this product is 1-800-272-6336.
Another tip is that Maltese thrive on praise they love to see that they are plasing their owner. when the pupgoes to the toilet in an unwanted space just say firmly no pick him up and place him outside even though he has already done his buisness this will teach him, this is where you want him to go. try not to scald i believe it doesnt have any effect just give him "the look" of dissapointment lol. he will know. i have a maltese and i taught him to give his paw instantly just by keep holding his paw and getting excited and shouting yeah, good boy, paw he recognised this was pleasing and when i kept saying paw he realised what was required. It only took me a day to teach him honest!. Maltese are really clever and quick learners some beleive that they should be confined to a cage or pen until potty trained but i dont buy into this. If you praise the good behaviour eg his toilet trips outside and ignore the bad behaviour because if you scald it it draws attention to it. I hope this advice is helpful, you can give it a go at least and if it doesnt work at least you tried, please let me know how you get on. Also i had a problem where my pup went to the toilet on the carpet and the smell remained so he thought it was ok to continue going there i had to buy a odour remover and eventually he stopped. Thanks for your question i hope you erradicate your problem.
