Short front legs

Question
Hi, we just got a lab today from a lady who is moving and can't keep her. She is 9 months old, pure breed and her front legs are shorter then her back ones. When I first saw her I thought she looked like a basset hound. Is there a reason for this and will she out grow it?  Thanks Robert

Answer
I would get the dog to a vet.  It is quite possible it has extensive bone damage from other than a complete and balanced diet.  She may have been giving it calcium supplement in addition to a puppy chow already too high in calcium.  An excess of calcium and in the wrong ratio to phosphors can keep the body from absorbing what it needs.  Just stick to a dog chow unless you intend to make a major study of dog nutrition.

Over weight is a big problem too.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them.  Each dog is different.  Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. I can't say how much of the damage can be undone by switching to a good diet.
