Question
Hi Cassie,
I have a handsome 1 year old black lab we named, Rebel (short for rebellious). On 3/19 after giving him a bath, Rebel became sick after eating soap suds. After becoming sick he sat beside it looking at it. I grab a towel to clean it, just as I began to walk over he crouched down and began licking it. I tried to nudge him out of the way and before I knew it he turned on me (it sounded as if he was fighting another dog)I tripped and fell, he then bit my foot. He also bit my husband's hand when he tried to grab him. I have recently noticed that he would growl and snap at me if I tried to take things from him that he shouldn't have, like a rotten orange. (I know that I made the mistake of not trying to tempt him away from where he had gotten sick at with a treat or toy). I have a grandchild due in June and he will live here with his mom. What can we learn to help us with Rebel, because I was surprised and hurt that this dog I LOVE would bite me, but I know that I was at fault for what I did and I understand that what he did was instinct. My concern is the baby and I am afraid Rebel may bite him at some point. What can I do to keep our "pack" intact. Our "pack" includes me, my husband, a daughter(soon to be grandson), a son, a 1 year old female chocolate Lab, Sable and Rebel.

Thanks for any advise you can give,
Donna

Answer
Each time your dogs do something you don't approve of, do the following:

1. Make your hand flat, palm facing the floor

2. Curve your fingers inward, but not to the point of making a fist

3. Take your hand in this position and firmly nudge your dog with the ends of your fingers. Now say "Chtt!". Be sure to say it in a deep, powerful voice, as if you are the king of the world! :P LOL
The reason I say that is because if the dogs sense any fear whatsoever, they will completely ignore you and treat you like another dog (not the pack leader).
