50 Lab

Question
QUESTION: I bought a puppy at 6 weeks weighing 25 lbs. He is 10 weeks weighing 50 lbs. I did look at the chart he is narrow at the waist. His mom weighed 90 lbs and dad weighed 110 lbs. Is this normal for him to be 50 lbs at 10 weeks? From other post it sounds like my dog is huge. I feed him 2 cups daily plus treats training. Also he chews on trees frequently even though I keep all kind of chew toys. Will the bark hurt him.

ANSWER: I hate to ask, but are you SURE he's really 50# at 10 weeks?  That's huge.  My show bred boys who are big were 50# when they were 5 months old.  Did you get an AKC registered Pedigree for this puppy?  If not, I might be inclined to think that he's not full lab and possibly Great Dane.  Even lab pups from LARGE parents aren't typically that big at 10 weeks.

The bark could hurt the pup if he pulls off a big enough piece and chokes on it.  The pup needs to be under supervision and if you see him chewing on inappropriate items, you need to correct him and show him what the right toys are.

QUESTION: He was weighed at the vet to get his last shots so I am guessing their electronic scale is correct. He is AKC registered. His dad is 110 lbs I was just wondering how big he will get being this big so young. He is not fat I can feel his ribs and taper at the waist but he is solid. I guessing I should switch to adult food soon?

Answer
You can do adult food now as you will want to slow his growth down as much as possible to off set any joint issues.  I wouldn't necessarily worry about it being large breed though, just a good quality adult is fine.  It's also very possible that his lines develop fast and early, and he'll slow down soon.
