jack russell in heat

Question
Hi, I have a 7mth old minature jack russell and I'm not sure exactly when she came into heat.I think its just today. I've been watching her carefully as i've read that the dog will have a red discharge while in heat, and I've been checking for this everyday for the last week. This morning I got up and a neighbours dog was in the garden mounting her. I havent noticed any discharge until today when i got my boyfriend to run the other dog.I havent seen any other strange dogs around and my jack russell is always near my side. I'm worried she might by pregnant. Do you think she could be pregnant?

Answer
Hi Rosie,
Unless the two dogs "tied" (were actually stuck together, rear end to rear end)- then the likelihood of pregnancy is slim. Please note that it is immediately after the red bleeding stops that she is most fertile (for 2 weeks!) - keep all dogs AWAY! You should have a "diaper" on her during the day to keep things clean and it is a pretty good deterrent if a male happens to get to her. Get one at any pet store. Be careful and good luck!
