Feeding and Ears

Question
I have my wonderful 5 mo. pure black German Shepherd puppy, Haven, on Eukanuba Lamb and Rice puppy food.  However, we are having a hard time getting his ears to stand and I was told that taking him off puppy food would help.  But then some say no, that he needs to stay on puppy food until 12 mo.  We are already gluing his ears and giving him calcium supplements, but should we change his food.  I love him no matter what.  I have owned a boxer, lab, and dachshund and Haven is by far the sweetest and smartest dog that has ever been in our family.  I just would really like him to look like a German Shepherd if it is possible.

Answer
STOP the calcium supplements.  That in itself could be the problem.  Excess calcium is one of the worst possible things for a growing large breed puppy.  it can wreck a dog's joints.  If your vet suggested it, find one familiar with modern chows and large breed puppies.

I would change to a all life stages food.  The adult version of the Eukanuba should be as good as anything.  Make the change over about a week.  The adult food will slow his growth allowing his joints more time to develop.  Puppy chow promotes fast growth at the expense of sturdy joints.

I am very skeptical about taping the ears.  Usually they eventually come up with out it, maybe no until almost a year.  When taped ears do stand up, they may have without it.
