german shepherd digestive system

Question
We have a German Shepherd that will be 8 months 01-06-11.  We are now feeding Royal-Cannin for puppies under 15 months and some chicken and rice can Royal-Cannin.  My dog still dry heaves in the mornings.  He had bad hi-cups for the first 6 months of his life. He was the smallest of his litter.  He is highly energetic and weighs between 60 and 70 lbs. He is really beautiful and surpassed his siblings in maturing.  He has his adult coat and some of them still have puppy coats. He has all his teeth. My concern is his digestive system.  The vet put him on maalox for a week and just can food.  He got diahrea real bad and we put him on Royal Cannin.  Is there something wrong?  I love my dog and want to make sure he is ok.  We take him to a very reputable vet but I think there is still something wrong.  I don't know maybe a nervous stomach or something else. I am not a vet but I am concerned.  This is our first GSD and he is the focus of our every moment away from work.  He is supposed to be show quality and has a lineage.  I would like to show him but it will be okay if he is just healthy good dog.  He is my baby.  Do you have any suggestions?

Answer
Most larger breed dogs do fine on a single meal after 6 months, but if he is only getting a single meal, I would go back to 2.

It could be bred in problems.  Many show breeders ignore minor problems, concentrating on looks.  Dry heaves in the morning would be no problem as long as the dog settles down by the time it goes in the ring.

Any sudden changes in food or diet can cause digestive upsets.  If he has settled down on dry Royal Canin, I would stick to it.  If he won't eat enough of it to completely hide his ribs, don't worry about it.  When he is a little older, he may eat better.

Keep working with your vet.  You might also consider a second opinion or ask for a referral to a specialist.
