Question
Hi,

Currently I have two german shepherds. Male: 6 years and female: 1.5 years. The female recently had seven puppies. The puppies are 8 weeks old now, and we're about to give them away. However, we would like to keep one too.
We are debating whether to keep a male/female pup.
Our 6 yr old male is not a big fan of his pups. He growls at them when they approach. He's quite fierce, and he doesn't make friends easily.
Does this mean we would have to keep the female? (we would prefer the male..) If we keep a male pup would they never become familiar with each other?
Note: None of the dogs have been neutered.
Thanks

Answer
You can certainly keep a male,. but I would have him neutered as soon as your vet will do so.(before four months usually) Also do get your dogs involved in some obedience classes and walk them walk them walk them LOL. I know people get tired of reading that advice. Also go to your web browser search engine and type in Alpha Boot Camp, should bring you to a great site about establishing pack order.
I hope you're planning to choose new homes for your babies very carefully Screening new owners is a huge part of breeding a litter of pups. Having your adult male neutered would help his behavior toward the pups too. Many adult male dogs are not crazy about rambunctious little pups. While you are establishing order, be sure you do not leave baby unsupervised with either parent after weaning.
Have fun and good luck!
