papers on my Chihuahua

Question

The new puppy
I was given a puppy Chihuahua in May and the owner doesn't have papers for her. She has now been bread with the Chihuahua next door who is AKC registered. Is there any way to obtain papers for my Chihuahua? From what I understand, the father of my dog is papered but I'm not for sure on that. I read where you can get a DNA test to check for a pure breed. Where would I get one of these and the approximate cost and would it help in obtaining papers for my dog? Thanks so much for your help.

Answer
Hi Becky,

I'm not an expert when it comes to breeding and the AKC, but it's my understanding that you can't register a dog with the AKC unless you can show that both of the parents are AKC registered and you obtain the needed paperwork from the seller at the time of the sale/transaction.

See:  http://www.akc.org/reg/withoutpapers.cfm

This is information on DNA Profiling straight from the AKC website:

I don't see how a DNA test would assist you under the circumstances that you've described.  Even if your Chihuahua has a father that is AKC registered, you don't say if the mother was.

I should make it clear that AKC registration and DNA testing does nothing to ensure that pups have been well bred and that they won't have congenital health problems.

Hope this helps...
