Question
How old must the bulldog be to breed...both males and females? Also, after a female has pups will she be the same as she was before the litter...happy, excited, not lazy? Also, is it good to have the male around the female and her pups after she delivers the pups?

Answer
Females shouldn't be bred until their 3rd heat at least. Males can be used at a year old as long as they have become acquainted with the semen collection process because they do not breed on their own. They have to be "handled" from the time they are young in order for them to cooperate with the process. Females are impregnated via artificial insemenation and will require a c-section for delivering the puppies. You should clear your schedule for the first 2 weeks to be on the safe side in case the puppies need to be bottle fed every 2 hours around the clock should she abandon them or if she has any complications at all such as mastitis or a drop in calcium.

You should keep the male away from the female and puppies so that she doesn't feel threatened and kill them at least until they're weaned.

As far as her state after the fact, it all depends on the dog. Some return to their previous personality and many others are matronly the rest of their lives.
