Question
QUESTION: Our little bulldog puppy was diagnosed with a cleft palate at the age of 4 months. We took him to Pullman, WA, where he had surgery. His hard and soft palate were both completely open! It was a long, hard recovery, but he is finally better. Unfortunately, at his last check-up it was noted that his soft palate is closed, but his hard still has a one-inch long opening. Do you think it is in his best interest to do surgery again? He is growing, able to eat, and happy! I don't want to put him through more surgeries unless I absolutely have to! He has not had pneumonia, but sometimes he does have green snot, which the vet said is probably from food in his sinus cavity chronically! He is just so sweet! I want to do what's best. The vet said that they once did 13 surgeries on a dog before the palate was fully closed. I can't imagine putting Busters through that!
Thank you

ANSWER: Hi Dionne and Buster!  This is a hard question for me.  If it was the Soft palate then I would say surgery is a must.  Being that the hard palate has the open spot you may be able to wait a little longer and see if it closes.  Your Buster is exposed to more ear infectons and possible pneumonia when the soft palate has the open area or cleft.

I would make sure the Vet keeps a good eye on his healing.  Give this baby some good supplements and say lots of prayers.  To lessen his possible infections a good immune system booster will be very helpful:

Pass this by your Vet for his approval:

1.  Colloidal Silver GIVE ***ONLY when you notice more secretions or possible sinus troubles - This is an anti-viral / All Natural:  ( you can give this for 1 month and then go off of it for a few weeks.  JUST don't use it every day of the year --- the body will get immune to it.

I sure do like Silver Shield by Nature's Sunshine ;  You can find Nature's Sunshine products at many health food stores or "Whole" food-type of stores.  You can also order it on-line:  Just give the children's dosage 2 x per day;
This is not a drug/ all natural.
You can take this with anything your vet also orders.

2.  NuVET wafer or powder:  Immune System booster / Allergy Blaster / Helps to heal and fight off infections:  SEE here:

I would give this baby 1 wafer or 1 teaspoon of NuVet Per day - Holistic //( not sold in stores)

Keep me posted -  Don't rush into another surgery unless you have no choice.
With Silver Sheild and NuVET you will have a fighting chance to stop infections.

QUESTION: Thank you so much for the info. No one has mentioned any of these supplements to me to help him fight off infections! I will definitely ask my vet about them. The hard palate is not going to close any further.  The surgeon already told me that he won't heal on his own. He was born with the hard and soft palate completely split open and now there is just a one-inch slit. I just don't want to keep putting him through these surgeries if it isn't going to stay closed. The surgeon told me that sometimes it takes 3 or 4 surgeries before the whole thing stays closed! If he can live a good, healthy life, with a little hole in his mouth then I would rather that, than the alternative, as the surgery is so traumatic for him! Do you think it is possible for him to still live a good life with a small hole in the roof of his mouth? I feel so much better knowing that there are supplements that I can try to keep him healthy. He is definitely not suffering in any way, other than possible infections. He is gaining weight, happy, etc. As a matter of fact, he is a little bit chubby! He was tube fed as a baby and now he eats without problem and food doesn't come out of his nose anymore at all!
Thanks again
Dionne

Answer
Hi Dionne,  Only time will tell for sure.  Wish that I could give you a solid answer.
As for the NuVet supplements, they do send it to your country.  ( cost a little more for postage)..  You can call 1-800-474-7044  Tell them you are working with me, Marie Peppers.
There are other things you can do for supplements.  It's best to start with the Silver and the NuVet Plus.

Keep Me posted.
