Shedding boxer

Question
I know its normal for dogs to shed but seriously, my dog is shedding TOO much. I live in Austin,TX and I have a 3 year old boxer named Charlie who sheds ALOT... i mean 3 inch mountains of hair. He's eating the lamb & rice meal by Nutro and drinks plenty of water, eats, poops and urinates regularly. I hate having to vacuum every day. Is the food causing him to shed so much? I hear giving him 1 raw egg a day helps... but i'm scared it'll get him sick. I know he has allergies and wonder if that's it. Any thing you can recommend to help?

Also,
I have a 3 1/2 month old boxer female that is starting to shed just as much... anything you can recommend I do for her? She eats that holistic nutro puppy ultra meal.

Answer
Hi Sharon,

Boxers do shed with the seasons...are you noticing this more now that the weather is warming or is this an all year problem?

Daily grooming will help.  I personally use the Zoom Groom by Kong:

It can be found in most pet shops.  I've found it, so far, to be the best brush for Boxers.  You may also want to check out the furminator:

Pricey but well worth it from what I'm told.

A raw egg a day may help with dry skin but it won't have any effect on his shedding.  I'd skip it.

Nutro is mostly filler and you're getting a not so great food for too much money.  IMO.  If you're going to spend that kind of money on food, there are better brands out there that don't contain corn or wheat (common allergens).

Some examples would be Canidae, Chicken Soup, California Natural, Nature's Recipe, Wellness, Solid Gold.  It could just be that the Nutro isn't agreeing with their systems.

Daily grooming really does wonders and coupled with a switch to a more digestible food, you may find the problem solved, if not at least cut back a bit.  :)
