Wont defend himself

Question
Hello, I am an avid walker with my 70 pound boxer boy. We walk about two miles a day and he regularly goes to the dog park. He is a very friendly dog and gets along with everyone and would not hurt a fly. While walking, we have had multiple non-leashed dogs approach us-some friendly and some not. Yesterday this happened and another boxer attacked him and really hurt him. He went to the vet and the owner of course is taking care of the bill. But my question is, everytime he has been attacked by another dog he cowers and crys but has never defended himself. Why is this? Though, he has defended me by baring his teeth at a stranger walking in the door while I was in the shower. My second question is, what can I do to defend both of us while walking? I looked into getting mace "muzzle" specifically for dogs, but have not purchased it. Thank you. Cari

Answer
I am totally stumped as to why your boy won't defend himself, yet defend you.

Most non-aggressive natured Boxers will defend themselves when provoked. And the more aggressive ones will approach other dogs and fight more readily.

The only suggestion is training classes. Ask a trainer- such as an obedience class-trainer if they can help with the "defense" aspect.

As far as protecting you and your boy out on walks, a stick or cane, and a non-damaging spray would be a good option. Check with local sporting good stores for your options.
