Question

New family memeber
My husband and I have just got a boxer from one of his co-workers.  He is a year and a half old.  I took him to my vet the day after we got him, he is about 15 lbs. underweight. was not caught up on any of his shots has an ear infection and is so nervous when a man comes around he wets all over the place.  We got the shots and ear medicine all taken care of.  We were also informed that he was crated all of the time.  He even went to the bathroom in his crate.  We feel with the right love and training that we can bring him up to be a wonderful addition to our family.  My question is there any effective way to help him through his wetting and also his potty training.  I do have a dog door that goes out of my wall and into a dog box that leads into a dog kennel.  I also have a 3 year old boxer.  The have seemed to have already bonded.

Answer
Hi Mary,
Your new boxer is quite adorable, how wonderful of you to take him in despite the problems and the past he has endured. Fifteen pounds is a lot for a dog to have been underweight, how horrible for him to have been mistreated this way.  He is lucky to now be in a loving environment.

The fact that he was crated all the time is going to make it a bit more difficult to potty train him, but hope is definitely not lost, dogs adapt to changes very well.  It is in a dog's nature to not want to soil where he sleeps, but because he was never allowed out of his crate he has now picked up the habit of doing so.  The most effective way to potty train an abused dog would be the same as treating him as a puppy.  Watch him as often as you can and if you see him having an accident tell him one firm "no" and take him immediately outside and tell him potty or whatever word you want to associate with the command.  When he finishes tell him good boy and give him a treat.  For a dog as timid and nervous as he is you want to stick completely with positive enforcement, training him and boosting his confidence at the same time.  He will also learn by watching your current 3 year old boxer.  Your new dog knows he is in a better environment and will be eager to please you in return for the love he is getting.

Try and take him out as often as you can, even if you don't think he has to go.  Every time he goes outside have treats and praises so he will begin to associate relieving himself outside with treats and attention.

As for his wetting because of being scared.  That is a sign of complete submission.  My guess is that at one point this poor dog was at one point beaten for doing something wrong or unwanted.  Over time as he learns to trust again this should go away.  You will need to work with him to learn that humans are not bad people.  Dogs are very forgiving and he will come around as he is treated well.
