Question
I recently adopted a year old boxer from a shelter. The only thing he knows is to come here, but he does not come very good. Any tips about training, diet, exercise, and any thing else will be well appreciated. This is my first boxer (his name is Morty).
Thank you for your time,
Sincerely Melanie

Answer
Hi Melanie,

Congratulations on the adoption of your new boxer dog, Morty. Boxers need to work for a living so give him a job, he should work for small bites of treats during training, make him sit then give treat, make him sit before giving him his dinner, before going outside, etc. Start giving treats then phase them out during your training after a few weeks with each command. If you want him to come to you give him a treat when he does the right thing, he will catch on rather quickly. Boxers need a firm but fair approach to training and should never be scolded harshly as they will distrust you quickly if you do. Consistency is key, they do like routines so start one and stick to it.

He should be fed a holistic diet as close to nature as possible.
He will need to be walked at least twice daily for 30 minutes.
