Question
My Cat:
My female cat is about 2 1/3 yrs old.  I have had her since she was 5 weeks old.  Because I got her when she was so young, I had to help her learn basic skills - cleaning herself (used a wet washcloth corner), using the litter box (that was difficult!), social skills and how to eat until she's full, not tell she throws up (still learning that one).  It's been hard but she's my baby.

Her Behavior pre-Spaying:
My cat was like a dog.  She came to her name or when I snapped.  If I'm in another room, all I have to do is call her name and she comes - every time.  She attacks my ankles when I walk and hugs them. She loves to box (she's been declawed for over a year). She talks and even has a certain cry that is her "name" for me. My vet told me that it's probably her way of vocalizing like a person because she doesn't know she's an animal. She started using the toilet without me teaching her, though sometimes she uses the sink (which is absolutely terrible!).

The Situation:
I just had her spayed less than a week ago but I'm curious about her behavior.  I know that it takes awhile for her hormones and all to adjust but I'm nervous because she is an entirely different cat.  She doesn't run around like crazy and follow me everywhere.  She rarely comes when I call her and doesn't jump on my lap when she does come - she just gets closer. She also doesn't hug my ankles when I walk any more.  I like that she won't go into heat any more but she doesn't talk at all any more.

What can I hope to expect her behavior to be once her hormones have settled down?  Will my baby ever be like a puppy to me again?

Thank you so much!

Answer
Hello Katy!

Aww...what a cutie you have!  Don't worry...it might take a couple weeks before she starts acting normally again.  Yes, her behaviour might change a little (she'll be a calmer version of her pre-spayed self), but it won't change dramatically, don't worry.

She's still got some pain from the surgery, thus why she won't rub on your legs, and doesn't hop right up and run over.  It takes a bit of time for them to not be in even slight pain from the surgery, so don't worry...she's just taking it easy while she heals.

You'll have your puppycat back soon, don't worry!  :o)

If you encounter any other problems, let me know...but things should be just fine.

Hugs to you both!  :o)
