how can i get my cat to like the dog or for him not to try to hurt him.

The cat is trying to hurt the dog or the dog is trying to hurt the cat?

It is my experience that the relationship between a dog and a cat requires trust on the part of both animals once they have that they will at minimum tollerate each other.  It takes time but to help things along you can make sure that the cat always has a safe place to be when the dog is around, even if the dog would never hurt her, she doesn't yet know that.  If she always feels safe when the dog is there she will begin to trust him and will start to get curious about him, that is when she will start to sniff him out and if he behaves things will progress from there.
