Improper Introduction

Question
Hello there...my friend has a cat and she is very very angry all the time. She will rub up against you and the next minute she is clawing your hand off. This is just to let you know what kind of cat she is...this is her all the time behavior.

The real issue

My friend brought another cat home to adopt and this cat is bigger than the original cat and is younger. AFTER googling what to do we realized we shouldn't have let them meet right away. So now the new cat is in a spare bedroom with the door closed and the original cat is in her carrier with the door open and WILL NOT come out. It has been almost 2 full days since she has come out. She growls, swats and hisses at her owner. She hasn't come out to use the litter box or even to eat.

We realize that we introduced these cats completely wrong, but what happens now? What do we do? We started over by separating the cats completely and the new cat is confined completely to that empty room. My friend feels like she has tortured (or is torturing) her cat and that her cat is different in some way and that her cat will never accept this other cat. My friend feels bad for the way her cat is reacting and feels that she has hurt her cat indirectly by bringing this other cat home.

Can you please advise us as to our situation?? Thank you for your time.

Answer
Okay, first this is going a take a long time. I honestly wouldn't have brought in a new cat with an already aggressive cat. So let's see what we can do. Start with finding an area that the cat's cannot hurt themselves in when they freak out, because they will. Put out some mouth-watering food, either canned food, tuna, whatever that the old cat can't resist. If she won't come out of the carrier, you can always take it apart or simply dump her out. Cats are cats, when they're pissed, there's no compromise, it's you do as I say and you can be pissed and get over it. So get her out and when she's eating comfortably, bring in the other cat and let her have her own dish of mouth-watering goodness. When they start eating in peace, start moving the food dishes closer together until they are practically eating from the same dish.** Note...this is not a quick process. And be sure to have a water bottle ready to squirt the old cat, because I'm sure she will not take kindly to this at first and want to start a fight. **Another note...expect a fight and only use the water bottle to help break it up. The fighting is perfectly natural and sometimes they just need to fight it out. It's also okay to pet the cats while doing this and speak calmly.
