Cat urinating

Question
We have 3 cats.  Nr.1 and 2 have been together 2 years and get along great.  Nr.3 has been with us about 1yr. and gets along with nr.1 but 2 & 3 just tolerate each other.

Nr.2 has started urinating or spraying in the corners of certain rooms.  We have made sure that our litter boxes are always clean, we have put the feliway diffusers around the house and the cats get plenty of attention.  We have also taken nr. 2 to the vet and had her completely checked out and nothing seems to be amiss.

Does anyone have any advice as to what to do.  We are desperate.  Thanks for any help and advice.

Answer
Martin,

When the vet checked #2, did he check for a urinary tract infection or urinary crystals? That is the most common reason for female behavior such as yours is exhibiting. Both are painful and a cat will associate that pain with the litterbox and go elsewhere.

Another reason could be that that she sees a stray cat out of a window. Since your cat can't get to the outside cat to defend her territory she may be marking inside, and/or the common behavior of inappropriate elimination as a result of the stress of a cat invading 'her' territory. The best way to stop behavior resulting from stray cats is to block the window that she can see the
'interloper' out of.
