Question
My cat doesn't meow a lot, but she ALWAYS meows right before and right after she's used her litterbox. She seems to avoid going to the toilet as long as possible. I'm thinking it hurts or something... It doesn't matter whether the litterbox is completely clean, or slightly dirty.

Answer
Inge,

That could be a sign that she has a urinary tract infection or urinary crystals. They are VERY painful, and the cats associate that pain with the litterbox. Sometimes they will avoid the litterbox completely and go in other places because of that reason.

Crystals are caused by too much magnesium and ash which is usually the result of feeding too much fish products (tuna especially) and 'bargain brand' cat foods.

It could also be that she is just being vocal and it is a habit. She may be telling you 'look ma, I'm a good kitty'.

I would take her to the vet to rule that out a medical problem first. If she does have a urinary problem then she needs antibiotics as soon as possible.
