Cat scatches leather

Question
We have 2 cats, but only one exhibits this behavior. Sascha, our 4 year old Tortie, seems to like scratching leather. We have had her (and our other cat) for 2 1/2 years. I provide numerous corrugated cardboard scratchers for them, some flat, some angled, and we have a sisal scratcher mounted to a corner for those upright, full-stretch scratches. Both cats use all of the scratchers regularly. We had some trouble with Sascha scratching one leg of our dining room table, but we wrapped aluminum foil around it and she seems to have stopped. She has always liked scratching the painted mouldings around the doorways, and now she has started tearing up our leather  dining room chairs. (I worried that might happen, as I can see the similarity in the soft feel of both surfaces, and I guess I was right.) I've caught her at least 3 times. Last night, my husband discovered that she has been scratching up his $300 leather boots. Since we didn't catch her doing it, all we can do right now is put the boots on a shelf, out of her reach. What is causing her to do this? Is there any way we can prevent it? Is there something we can buy for her to scratch that will simulate this surface texture that she seems to really like? She is, otherwise, healthy, happy, and affectionate so it doesn't *seem* like she's acting out for any reason, and she does use all the other scratchers too.

Answer
For this situation I would recommend getting what's called, soft claws. They are plastic tips you place over their claws that prevents them doing damage.

It's hard to make some cats understand what is and what's not okay to scratch. You don't want to get something similar in texture as that could make her see that it's okay to scratch other things that feel like this. I would incorporate the spray bottle as well. One other thing I've done is whenever I catch my cat scratching on something she shouldn't is pick her up and take her to the scratch post and simulate scratching.

It's great that you have different styles of scratch posts, but have you tried other textures as well? For instance, one of my cats does not like rope-style posts but she loves carpet and furniture. I actually went ahead and bought soft claws myself for her and now I live by them. There are also scented sprays that you can spray on areas that you don't want them to be around as well.
