shadow
a couple weeks ago i was given a 1.5 year old female cat (shadow) as she didn't like the new kitten. both her previous owner and myself love her dearly and she is given as much attention as she wants though she is quite solitary and can be a bit stand offish.she has been this way since birth.  after about a week my partner brought home an 8 week kitten, female (shola) as a present which he had picked before we got shadow. both cats eat, drink and toilet well, shola having an upset tummy after being fed pasta the only problem. my problem is, shadow hisses at shola when she goes near her but does reprimand shola when she plays up. in turn, shola hisses and swipes at shadow when she goes near her when she is eating, i have had to put separate bowls down to avoid shadow being hurt. (shadow used to share with her birth sister and the kitten at the previous home)will they ever get along, and is there anything i can do to help this. they do play okish when chasing a laser dot.
thank you in advance for listening and any help you give will be appreciated xxx

Answer
If I understand right, Shadow and Shola had previously lived together? Or was it that Shadow lived with a kitten before? What I recommend is my "food mediator" approach. This will gradually let them both realize that they can be happy living with each other without the drama.

It's good to have separate food dishes as well litter boxes to start things off. What I want you to do is give them each a dish of their favorite food and place them as far apart as possible. Once they are eating peacefully, gradually begin to move them closer together until they are either eating side by side or out of each other's dish. Note: this will not always happen on the first attempt, so don't get discouraged when they hiss and try to run away, because that probably will happen.

It is perfect normal for the kitten to be a little good aggressive when Shadow comes near. This just means that the kitten probably had to fight for food/mother's milk when she was younger.

Keep me posted and let me know if there is more to the story as I had questions with their past.
