Cat got out once accidently, now ALWAYS wants out.

Question
I got my son a cat recently(e has been neutered).  He was about to be sent to the pound as the owners were moving.  When I got the cat I was assured he was an indoor cat and I believe them.  He never had an issue with wanting to go outside.
I like to keep my screened windows open and one night I had it open a little too much and he knocked the screen out and got out.
He didn't go far and seemed scared to be out there but now he is hurting himself trying to get to windows so he can go out them.
We live in an Apt and near a very busy street.  Going outdoors is NOT an option.
How can I keep him from trying to force himself out a small opening in the window?

Any help appreciated.

Answer
Nancy,

Cats are natural hunters and want to be outside if they can. And they love to explore. A lot of people leash train their cats so they can go outside. Here is an excellent link for how to do it:

Get lots of toys and play interactive games with him. A pet laser light is good, fishing type dangle toys, and drawing around a shoestring for him to catch is also good. Little furry toy mice are fun for them also.

A kitty friend for him may be good. Cats need to have kitty friends that they can play with and snuggle with. It helps them from being bored.

Have a cat  tree that is high enough that he can look out the window.

You just have to keep his mind occupied. But if you don't want to leave the door cracked open and watch him for a short period of time, the leash would be the best bet. It's only a natural reaction to want out for some cats.
