How to train a stray cat

We caught a stray cat and i try petting it but it purrs and then it opens its mouth like it is scared. What can i do to make it like me? I tryed a ball that bounce the big ones and i gave it food but it won't listen, what do i do?
And also it smells bad because it litters out how can i wash it? Please Help

Give it some treats, and extend your arms and let it familiarize and recognize your scent. Pet it gently, and blink at it. Give it some toys to play with, and use a soft voice. All you can do to wash it is brush it really. He will stop smelling oddly after being in the house a while, even if goes outside sometimes. Good luck.
