splashing out water bowl

Question
I have 2 cats from the same litter, a boy "Sphinx" and a girl "Baby Girl." They are about 6 months old. I bottle fed them from the time that they were about 1 week old.

Lately Sphinx has been splashing water out of the dish that they share. Yesterday, 9-28-09, they both were "fixed" at the same time and also brought home. Ever since then he has been repeatedly been taking his paws and clearing the water dish.

This bothers me because I am not sure how much water that my other cat has been able to drink due to his behavior.

I would like to know what may cause this and how to correct this behavior?
                    Thank you!

Answer
Becky,

Since he was fixed yesterday his behavior is probably an outlet for his pain or discomfort. He doesn't understand it and is trying to relieve it, and in his mind that will help. It is like a human relieving stress. Cats do not have any reasoning ability so will not understand why he has it.

Kittens that were bottle fed a lot of times will have bizarre behaviors because they didn't have a cat mama to teach them about life and proper behavior.

As for the water bowl issue I would suggest getting a tin disposable roasting pan or similar container and put the water dish inside, so if the water spills it will be contained in the tin. You can also use a heavy ceramic bowl that he can't tip and put it on something so it is off the ground....low enough for the cat to drink out of, but high enough that he can't play in it.

Leaving a bathroom faucet on drip will guarantee that the other cat will have water. And if the male wants to play with that it won't cause any water issues. My cats love the fresh water from a faucet!
