Question
hello,
I know this question is not related to your area, but since, i dont know where else to turn for an answer, i have to ask this question to you. recently, my friend's cat died a very painful death from cancer. the vet. had suggested mercy killing, but due to religious consideration, my friend did not agree. In my religion, killing a cat accidently or delibrately is a big sin. we have to make a pure gold replica of the cat and donate it to a temple. though, this custom ensures cats'safety at the hands of humans, this time it caused my friend's cat a lot of suffering. I would like to know the status of euthanasia in your country. is it approved? does euthanasia cause a lot of pain? or is it not advisable even in your country. let me know.

Answer
Hello Sakshi!

Interesting question!  And, though it isn't in my area of expertise, I do know enough to answer your question.  :o)

Yes, animal euthanasia is legal and approved in our country.  It is quite painless.  In fact, I'd be willing to say that the animal might not even be aware it is dying while it is passing on.  I would venture to say that the animal thinks it is falling asleep, which is why most Americans say they had to "put their dog/cat/animal to sleep".

There are quite a lot of people here in the US that are against animal euthanasia, but also quite a few that think it's more humane than allowing an animal to suffer.

Either way, it's up to each individual, and any veterinarian would be willing to go either way.  If the person elects to euthanize the animal, the person has the opportunity to hold the animal while it passes on so it is not stressed or frightened.  While, if a person elects to not euthanize, veterinarians are willing to give medications to limit the amount of pain the animal goes through during their last days.

Does that answer your question?  If not, or if you have any other questions, feel free to write again!  :o)
