Cat affection

Question
I adopted a 5 month old shelter kitten a week ago. In the shelter she was very affectionate, head-butting and wanting attention. She has been friendly since she has been home but appears uninterested in being close to us and does not seem like a lap cat at all. Do you think she will continue to become less affecionate the more she gets used to us? Is there anything I can do to help her acclimate and become comfortable? I was really hoping for a cuddly cat, and she seemed so affecionate in the shelter that I thought she would stay this way.

Answer
Dawn,

She may be lonely for her littermates. It's always better to adopt 2 kittens. It helps them if they have another kitty for reassurance, companionship and comfort in their strange new world, and to play kitty games with that a human can't do.

A week isn't very long to let her acclimate to you and her new home. Everything is new and frightening to her. Give her some more time to see what her personality is going to be. She will probably do back to being that affectionate kitty when she gets used to things.
