Question
I have 2 female cats from the same litter.  Recently, one of them has begun to lose weight, and you can now see her hip bones,  not seriously, but getting there.  My other problem is that they both like to pee anywhere BUT the litter box.  They are indoor cat.  They are small for their age as they are almost 3 and and still smaller then a 1 year old cat.  The one that is losing weight eats more then the other one, as well as wet cat food.  And they both drink alot of water.  Just wondering what might cause a cat to lose weight so fast, and why are they peeing all over the house.

Answer
Sarah,

They could have kidney problems like urinary stones/crystals. The stones are very painful and they associate that pain with the litterbox so they go elsewhere. They are usually caused by too much fish or fish products (too high in magnesium) or 'bargain brand' cat food (too high in ash).

The one losing weight sounds like she may have worms. I suggest not getting wormer from a pet store, instead get it from a vet. The over the counter wormers out now, the worms are developing an immunity to it. The vet has the latest products.

I also suggest that you take both cats to the vet for an exam. They could have something hereditary or contracted from the mom. I can only give you possibilities, the vet can give you probabilities.
