We have 3 Persians, the mother and a son and daughter. Mother is 9 years old; offspring 8.

They generally use the litter box but sometimes go on the slate entryway floor. I recently put down a carpet mat and they avoided that for a while but now use it almost as frequently as the slate floor. It seems as though they use the floor more often when there is some sort of stress, for example, when our daughter who is in charge of emptying the litter boxes is lax or, if we leave town for a while (even though we have someone else look in on them).

Do you have suggestions for getting them to more consistently use the litter box?
Answer -
If you have 3 cats, you really need at least 2 boxes. this usually helps quite a bit.

Sorry that I was not clear. We actually have four litter boxes in the house. I put too much emphasis on the one that's in the entryway where they usually make these mistakes. Any other suggestions?

Answer
ohhhhhhhhhh...well good job on the number of boxes!
really there isnt much you can do about it other then try moving it somewhere else. even that might not work because they may have decided that going on that slate is a good idea ...box or not.
sorry i cant offer any more help.
