QuestionI have a 5-6 week old kitten, I am currently feeding her baby food (chicken) as advised by my vet. She is very healthy and active but I would guess that she is maybe only eating between 2 and 3 teaspoons of food a day. Is this enough?
Thanks
AnswerHi Alli. Baby food is a good source of protein. The problem with it, however, is it's more than 90% water. So a kitten is going to feel full from eating it but get very little in the way of nutrients. Two to three teaspoons is definitely not enough.
I would ask the vet if he carries Hill's a/d canned food. I find this excellent for young kittens who are in transition between eating milk and eating solid foods. It's got a very creamy consistency, similar to human baby food. However, it's packed with nutrients and is a high calorie food to help provide lots of energy, even if only eaten in small amounts.
Other than that, you could buy a nutritional supplement such as NutriCal (available through vets and some pet stores), and give her that according to the instructions. It provides vitamins, minerals, sugars and calories.
