Feral Cat & her 3 kittens

Question
We have a feral cat named Blondie.  Blondie has just started letting us pet her and handle her.  She is pretty affectionate.  Blondie has had 3 kittens and are approximately 2 months old.  They won't let us touch them.  We have grown attached to the kittens and Blondie and feed the 4 of them daily.  We have no intention of making them house cats.  We want to take each of them to the vet for their first check up and to have them spayed or neutered (not sure of the sex of the kittens).  How soon can I take them to get them fixed?

Answer
Hi Cindy.  Thanks for stepping in and taking responsibility for Blondie and her babies!

Honestly, the sooner with ferals, the better.  Vets are routinely performing pediatric neuters these days.  Kittens just 6 or 7 weeks old are being safely spayed and neutered, thanks to the availability of safer anesthetics than we used to have, and also due to the laws requiring kittens to be neutered before they are adopted out by humane societies.  I see feral kittens 8 weeks and under spayed at every Spay Day I volunteer with.

But, you need to make sure you get them done the first time you trap them, because they've got good memories and aren't likely to wander into the trap or let you get near them a second time any time soon.  So I would call around to local vets and ask them if they will perform pediatric neuters on feral kittens about two months old.  I'd go with whatever vet will alter them earliest.  The longer you wait, the bigger the risk the kittens will disappear and end up starting colonies of their own elsewhere.
