CAT IS ALWAYS SCARED

Question
My wife's sister bought her a cat to help replace one that we had to put down. We have two other cats both indoor cats and they all get along quite well with each othet. We have had this new cat for about 2 years and have asked our vet about this same topic and have had no success thus far. The cat is OVERLY SCARED OF EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE including us. If the cat is in the living room and we walk in he runs, hides and poops. If we are sitting watching tv and he comes into the room and reach out to pet him, he runs, hides and poops. If you are sitting on the couch and he walks by your feet and move in any way(cross you legs, tap your toes, scratch your leg etc.) he runs ,hides and poops. The only room that he is comfortable in is the bedroom and only at night. He will come up onto the bed and allow you to pet him, scratch his belly, he even rolls on his back to have his belly rubbed. If you try to sit up though he runs, hides and poops. Our vet suggested Rescue Remedy but it had absolutley no effect. I called a shelter and another vet and they both suggested Felaway and it had absolutley no effect. I need to know what to do because we are moving and will be unable corrale the cat for the move. We do not want the constant cycle of running, hiding and pooping continuing any longer especially now that we are moving to place with wall to wall carpet and we have a baby on the way. Please advise us on what to do.

Answer
If you've tried Rescue Remedy and Feliway, and nothing else has changed that could have sparked his behavior, then I would suggest speaking with your vet about the possibility of an anti-anxiety/anti-depressant medication for him such as Prozac or Amitriptyline.  If there is nothing physically wrong with him, then its possible that it is something psychological, in which case medication may help him to mellow out a bit and not be so scared.
