Answer
Hi Jade,

I don't have a lot of knowledge about holistic treatments for these issues. However, both stomatitis patients AND colitis patients can greatly benefit from the use of prednisone. This is a steroid, similar to the one that the vet gave her as a shot, but it can be given in pill form. It reduces inflammation associated with colitis and suppresses the overactive immune response that causes stomatitis.

Generally, removal of all teeth is the best treatment for stomatitis, because the presence of plaque in the mouth is the main cause. Most cats are okay with their canines, but there are many who can't even tolerate these. And still some cats still suffer from stomatitis after ALL the teeth are gone, and those cats will usually require treatment with a steroid. It is preferable to give oral prednisone, but an injectible steroid like cortisone can be helpful, too.

Cats with colitis benefit from steroids, too, and prednisone is generally preferred here, as well. If colitis only arises occasionally, then the cat may not need treatment all the time. The steroid may be given at the onset of symptoms and continued for a few weeks (one cortisone shot lasts 4-8 weeks). However, if the cat suffers with chronic colitis, permanent placement on oral prednisone should be considered to not just control flare-ups, but prevent them.

I think, considering that your cat suffers from both conditions, you may want to think about placing her on the prednisone for a while if it seems she is having stomach or mouth inflammation. Prednisone is quite inexpensive, and cats generally tolerate it very well.

However, as mentioned before, I'm not sure if there are natural alternatives that might calm her belly. Stomatitis tends to be rather difficult to treat naturally, though. Mouth rinses (ask your vet about a C.E.T. mouth rinse) are important to help eliminate the bacteria that are causing the condition.

Good luck!
