Question
Our cats name is Lilly. She was part of a litter that was birthed in a old garage at a place I worked. She is timid when strangers around, not ever to be seen. At night its a different story, she rubs all over you spreading her scent, purring, rolling around but does not like to be picked up. She has been uroinating on my rugs quite frequently lately. I can not get her to stop. Have tried to much dissatisfaction feliway, litter attractants, diffent litters, different litter boxes to no avail. last resort is a) prozac or b) get rid of her. We do love her but the cash is mounting up. Cant get the urine smell out of 5' by 8' rug, as well as others. I picked them up and now she has peed on my 2 yr olds play couch. Uhgggg! How frustrating! I did spank her and lock her in the bathroom with litter box/food/water but dont want to make it worse. I do rent and am fortunate to be able to have pets but stipulation was if they did NOT urinate. What can I do? Honestly, will prozac work or be another waste of money? Please help me with any suggestions you may have. I am running out of patience very quick on this. I even got her a play mate thinking she was lonely. Didn't help either.

Answer
Hi Lisa.  I think medications would be worth a shot on this.  They aren't a guarantee, but they work in most cases where anxiety is the reason why a cat is urinating around the house.  There are choices aside from Prozac, too.  Some may be less expensive.  Generally, what I've read indicates that medications like Elavil and Buspar come in somewhere around 70% effective to treat inappropriate urination, and Prozac and Clomicalm come in as high as 90% according to some.  I would try to give one a shot for at least 4 weeks before deciding it doesn't work, and then consider trying a different one.  Although Prozac has been shown to be most successful, there are individuals who respond better to other medications for some reason.  Good luck!
