Stray Cat In the Yard..

Question
We moved recently and our new house came with a lost cat.  I assume the cat lived nearby and is now homeless.  The guy next door feeds the cat and we leave water daily.  Should I try "adopt" this very handsome cat.  He is white, although a little dirty, with the most wonderful blue eyes, seems heathy, will come close but won't let us touch.  He comes in our open doors but runs when he sees us. I do not think the cat is ferile as he sleeps on our porch with our cat who seems to enjoy the company.  Ideas, suggestions are all helpful.  Sean

Answer
Hi Sean and thanks for writing.  Here are my personal opinions : -)  I would begin by putting food down near where your "new" cat is sleeping and water.  Let him stick closer to your porch.  As soon as you can grab him, run him to the vet and have him scanned for a microchipped - just in case he is someone's lost, loved one that wandered away.  I would also run a FOUND CAT ad in your local paper.  See if you can get a photo of him, and put it on the lost cat websites - remember just in case someone like me is looking for their lost cats even after many months, or years.

THEN yes, if you have the room and since he's making buddies with your cat, he sounds like a wonderful addition to your home.  With shots caught up and spaying/neutering make him more than welcome in your home for his life and you will be rewarded with the best kitty love!  I found that rescued cats like this make the most loving ones after you show them you care and will not hurt them.

No, he doesn't sounds like a feral cat to me at all either.  But like I said, I would nab the cat ASAP and at least get him scanned in case he's got a microchip.  Also check the LOST ads in your paper in case someone IS looking for him.

Oh, god bless you for helping take care of this one and I hope you do find in your heart and live a wonderful place for this "new" kitty!

Thank you for caring,
Debbie
