Kitten too aggressive and not affectionate

Question
Dear Tina,
Where to begin??? I foud my kitten when she was only 3 weeks old,so we bottle fed her and all that good stuff. But not, when she is 6 months old there is few behavioral problems. She still suckles on my hand, and that is the only time she is affectionate. Otherwise, she does not like to be held or on my lap to be petted. When I attempt to hold her, she stay for 5 seconds and she leaves . Another problem is that she is very aggressive toward strangers in the house (she is a house cat that does not go out at all). She hisses but she does not attack, at least not yet. So please, as you can see I really need some help. I want to be able to pet her and to invite people over. Thank you and HELP

Answer
Hi Angela,

All this is pretty normal behavior for a cat! Most cats only want to be held or petted when they choose it. Some are very cuddly but you will find that as your cat goes through her adolescence (now) she is finding her independence. For the next couple of years she may be more aloof, but then as she matures she'll come back to being more affectionate again. Just like a human growing up :)

I never force affection on a cat, if they want to snuggle they will come to you.

The hissing at stranger shouldn't be a problem - she's just feeling insecure. I highly doubt she will attack anyone if they leave her alone. Ask guests to ignore her and not look directly at her - staring at her will make her feel threatened. She'll eventually learn to tolerate these "intruders" in her home and maybe even to like them.

You can also try using the Feliway plug-in diffuser and/or spray. Feliway helps reduce territorial aggression in cats, it mimics relaxing pheromones that cats exude from their cheek glands. Spraying doorways and furniture with Feliway can help ease territorial aggression and calm nervous cats. The plug-in diffuser creates a constant release of Feliway. It is not detectable by humans at all (the spray smells like rubbing alcohol when you first use it, but that quickly evaporates). It is sold in most pet stores and online.
