Cat in distress

Question
Hey everyone, I have question for you all, an hopefully you can  help me. My cat has just given birth to 4 kittens and sadly momma cat had complications and all died. Now Momma is depressed and always wants me to follow her where she nested. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to bring other baby kittens for to look after. It would be as great help if anyone that reads this post could help.

Answer
Blanca,

Before, I would do anything, I would try to establish why the kittens died.  All you said were that there were complications.  If they were mechanical, that is one thing, but if they were do to an infection (uterine infection, sour milk or the like), the infection must be cleared up!  So a trip to the vet may be warranted.

If you know for sure there was no infection, then you could consider the adoption option.  Unfortunately, she will know the other baby kittens are not hers.  However, some mothers will adopt baby kittens.  If you try it, you will need to watch how it goes.  If she accepts the kittens and still has milk, that may be OK.  If not, she will get over the distress in a week or so.

Personally, I would not giver her other kittens, but would wait a couple of months until her body is over the pregnancy and birthing process and have her spayed.

Best regards... Norm.
