Cat defecation

Question
Our cat just turned 7 years old.  For the last 4 years or so our cat has started defecating outside of his box.  It has become more and more prevelant causing us to seriously think about getting rid of him.  We love our cat and just don't know what to do.  He goes in his box but occasionally (usually a couple times per month, more often more recently) he will poop on our carpet in various places.  We haven't changed his litter or his box or gotten new furniture or any such thing.  I say that because those are always the ?'s we get.  He doesn't return to the same spots and seems to do this at random.  Please help.  He is a completely indoor cat and is very healthy.

Answer
Hi Matt,

There is something that is disturbing him. I would move his box to a quieter area in the house and see how he does. Also make sure you clean the areas where he defecated with an enzymatic cleaner to remove all odors. Keep his box clean but don't use very strong smelling cleaners. Or get a new litter box. Try these ideas and see what happens. Good luck and let me know if they work.

Ciao, Karen
