cats not drinking water

Question
We have 2 cats (they are about 18 months old. They are not brother and sister.  Neither one of them seem too interested in drinking any water.  We put out fresh water daily and they never drink it.  We feed them canned food.  The are going in their litterbox regularly.  Also they are very active and chase each other around the house daily.  How can we get them to drink their water or is their something else we can give them to drink. Now that the weather is getting warmer i don't want them to get dehydrated.  Thank you!

Answer
Lisa,

It doesn't make sense that your cats are not taking in any fluids. Is it possible that they may be drinking from a leaky faucet, garden hose, the toilet, etc without your knowledge? If your cats are eating a diet consisting of soft food they may not need quite as much to actually drink as a portion of soft food is water. Some cats will drink out of the toilet which I don't recommend if you use harsh chemicals to clean your toilet. Some cats like to drink from a dripping faucet and use the tub or sink as a nice cool place to lie when the weather gets warmer. I do think that it would be wise to take the cats to see a qualified vet for a complete physical exam including blood work just to be sure that all of their systems are functioning as they should. I know that some cats drink less frequently than others, but it does seem odd to me that you are not seeing them drink at all unless they are either indoor/outdoor cats drinking from an outdoor water source or they are drinking from the toilet or a leaky tap in your home. Please let me know what you find out, this is certainly an interesting question. I would appreciate knowing where your cats are getting their water from and how they have been managing to hide it from you.
