cat constantly meowing/crying

Question
QUESTION: My cat is constantly meowing/crying and acting unusual, looking for a place to hide or get out of the house (she has always been an indoor cat).  she is a feral cat we took in about 6 yrs ago. What could be wrong?

ANSWER: Denise,

Is she spayed?  If not, this may be the crux of the problem.

If she is spayed, she may still be aware that this is still major breeding time for cats in the Northern Hemisphere.

Is she still eating properly and using the litter pan?  Are there any signs of a possible medical issue?  If the answer to the first question is "no" and the answer to the second question is "yes", a visit to the vet may be in order.

Best regards... Norm.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: She has been spayed since kitten.  She is eating good as usual.  Since we have 2 cats it is hard to tell who is using the litter pan... but it is cleaned out every evening and last night appeared to be normal waste.  No other signs of medical issues.

She stopped her unusual behavior and crying after a few hours.  If it is the breeding issue, then why has she never acted like this in prior years?

Since she was a kitten she has always had regular checkups at the vet, until the last year.  Finances are very tight, my husband has been out of work for over a year and my commission sales only business has been slow.  If money was not such an issue, we would just take her to the vet.  So thanks for your help we really appreciate it.

Is there anything else we should be looking for or be concerned about?

Thanks, Denise

Answer
Denise,

Wow, you have covered all the bases nicely.  Since she is spayed and this is a very recent phenomenon, that is why I would believe there might be a possible medical problem.

However, this is the first mention of the other cat.  I am assuming their relationship (i.e. their behavior towards each other) has not changed at all.

Truly I am at a loss to be able to explain what is going on.

I know this is very, very far fetched, but cats can often sense things we cannot, like pending natural disasters, pending man-made disasters, the supernatural, etc.  So I would just be on my guard.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Best regards... Norm.
