Cat Biting Behavior

Question
I have a siamese. I do not know her exact age but we have had her three months. I assume she was about 6 weeks when we got her. She has a problem with biting electrical wires (cell phone charger)and climbing on the dining table and biting into the loaf of bread. How can we correct her on this?

Answer
Hi Janelle,

There are a few ways to modify this behaviour,  can't stress enough please don't hit kitty. Cats don't learn this way (it doesn't sound like something you'd do, but just to get that out of the way :) )

What I've found to work with bad behaviour is to react immediately with punishment- in my case I use a 'time out' where I'll put kitty in a room like the washroom (which is perfect as the litter tray is in there) and turn out the lights. Next time your kitty climbs on the table, pick her up and put her in the room with the lights out. Say 'No' once, and firmly right before you pick her up and while she is still doing the 'bad' thing, but don't say anything after that (sometimes bad behaviour is an attempt to get attention, even if it is negative attention- by ignoring kitty you're not responding to this)

You could also try using a spray bottle, spray kitty when she behaves badly- my experience has been that this works with some cats and not others. If a cat likes water, they'll behave badly just to get squirted.

If you can, tape down any cords that she chews, and keep phone chargers up high where she can't get to them.

Good luck, I hope this helps, let me know if you need anything further. :)
