Getting a second cat

Question
I have a big two-year-old orange male tabby.  Until I got married four months ago, he and I lived in a home with another cat.  Because he's lonely while my husband and I are at work during the day, I am getting a second cat as a companion/playmate for him.  I have been researching this, as any pet owner should, and my biggest question is whether or not personality of the new cat matters as much as some sources believe they do.  Should I be looking at a cat who has a similar personality to my cat's?

Answer
Hi Phoebe,

Good idea to do your research! Yes the personality of the new cat does matter quite a lot, but it can be tricky to know what to look for without knowing your cat. You don't necessarily want a cat just like yours. For example if your cat is outgoing and dominant, he may be better off with a more timid cat who doesn't challenge his authority. And there are some cats who just really hate other cats, though most will get along pretty well at least with another cat if introduced properly. Here is a guide on how to introduce the new cat:

When choosing a second cat or kitten, talk with the adoption staff at the shelter or rescue group and describe your cat, ask them for help choosing a cat with a compatible personality. It's ideal if they know for a fact that that cat has lived harmoniously with another cat in the past.

A tip is that formerly-feral cats often get along best with other cats because they are used to living in colonies with a feline hierarchy, as opposed to a cat who was adopted as an only kitten and then taken to the shelter after he grew up alone.

Except some initial hissing and rough patches, cats are territorial and initially your cat might be a bit worried, especially if you take things too fast.

If you wish to follow up with a complete description of your cats' personality and past interactions with other cats - if applicable - I can help you with more specific info on picking a new cat to adopt.
