cat losing patches

my cat is losing patches of hair off of his head, and also has a bump above his ear and below his jaw, and has a red eye could he be sick or have worms?

Hi Janay,

The most common reason for hair loss around the head is ringworm, which is not a worm at all but a fungus.  Are the patches round?  Are the bumps you describe large or like little scabs?  And is the area where he's lost the hair scaly?  If yes to these then its probably ringworm and you can get a shampoo from your vet, or some pet stores carry it, called Malaseb that you use every other day until the scaliness goes away.  Another thing I do is use Lamisil AT, its an over the counter ointment for Athlete's Foot that you can put right on the affected spots.  I'm not sure why his eye is red, you could try putting a couple of drops of eye wash (the same eye wash you and I use, get it at your local drug store) in his eye a couple of times each day.  If the redness doesn't go away or if it gets worse you'll want to see the vet.  The same with the patches of hair, your vet will be able to use a special light to tell if it really is ringworm.
