Male neutered cat behavior

Question
I was adopted by a male cat about a year ago.  I've never had a cat. Vet says he's now about 3 years old.  I had him neutered last year and he lives in the house, on occasion going out in the yard.  He never left the yard until this spring when my new neighbor moved across the street with 2 unneutered cats, 1 male 1 female.  He now cries all the time and the cats congregate at my door.  He runs out when the door is cracked and if I can find him, he's hanging out with the MALE cat across the street in the MALE Cat's yard.  WHY is he doing this and what can I do to stop him?  He is a very sweet, docile cat who has always wanted to be whereever I am, until now.

Answer
Sidney,

I think that your kitty has just discovered that he has friends in the neighborhood. From the way that you describe him he sounds like a social cat who just wants to make friends with everybody. The behavior is slightly unusual as cats tend to be fairly territorial, but you don't mention him fighting. It could be that your neighbor gives him treats that he doesn't get at home. All in all, I think that the best course of action is to find out if the neighbors are feeding him, if so you may want to tell them that he isn't a stray and he doesn't need extra food or treats and that you would appreciate it if you were the only person feeding your cat because you will need to know what he is eating in case he develops health problems later on in life. Obesity in cats causes the same sorts of health problems as it does in humans and I am sure that if your kitty is eating double he may be enjoying it, but it can carry risks. I see nothing wrong with the friendship between the cats, but I do think that there is more to it than that. It could even be something as simple as the neighbor growing catnip. If that is the case you can grow your own catnip, it is a fairly tough herb from the mint family that is easy to grow. Hopefully I have given some helpful advice and you will be able to share your little guy with his kitty friends, but also have the time that you have been missing with him.
