Question
Why won't my 1 year-old cat eat cat food at all?

Answer
Charles,

A general answer to this question would be simply that your cat is aware of what's best for him and the vast majority of commercially produced cat foods on the market today aren't even close to providing high quality species appropriate nutrition. You may seriously want to consider checking out the following websites for more information about the nutritional requirements of your feline companion:

- catinfo.org

This site was recommended to me by our family vet after the Menu Foods pet food recalls of 2007 nearly cost my eldest cat her life. This site contains valuable information about the nutritional needs of cats and the veterinarian who created this site provides a recipe for homemade cat food as well as the names of commercially available cat foods that are of higher quality than most other pet foods on the market.

- catnutrition.org

This site contains even more in depth information about feline nutrition and a couple of homemade cat food recipes that make larger quantities of food than the recipe on catinfo.org which are ideal if you have multiple cats.

- felinespride.com

Feline's Pride is a company that makes a high quality raw diet for cats of all ages, breeds and sizes (including some big kitties in zoos and sanctuaries). This company is willing to ship their diet frozen and they guarantee that it will arrive mostly frozen if you are there to sign for the package when the courier delivers it. The site contains pages and pages of testimonials from pet parents whose cats were in dire shape before beginning a diet closer to what nature intended for them and the amazing changes the cats have undergone as a direct result of a fairly simple intervention - changing their diet.

This is an article that I think all pet parents should read because it contains accurate information about what actually does end up in pictures. The image that pet food manufacturers try to create by and large is that the foods they make are made from ingredients that any human would be willing to eat when the reality is very different. This is not something that I'd recommend reading while you eat if you have a sensitive stomach.

It might be easier for me to answer that question if I knew for sure what your kitty actually eats so that I have a general understanding of his usual diet and whether or not he's simply begging for tidbits that have little nutritional value because he's aware that you're a soft touch or he's trying to eat a diet that's closer to what nature actually intended for him. If you're interested I'd certainly be glad to help you figure out what you can feed your cat (that he'll actually eat) in order to meet his unique nutritional needs. If you have any further questions or concerns I'd be more than happy to help you out to the best of my ability.
